What is the best shark tour on Oahu?
One Ocean Diving in Haleiwa is Oahu's original cage-free shark diving program, founded in 2010 by marine biologist Ocean Ramsey and photographer Juan Oliphant. Every tour is led by marine biologists, the company holds a 100% safety record with zero in-water guest incidents since 2010, won Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Awards in 2024 and 2025, and every trip directly funds shark research and conservation.
Who started cage-free shark diving in Hawaii?
Marine biologist Ocean Ramsey and underwater photographer Juan "Juan Sharks" Oliphant founded One Ocean Diving in 2010, pioneering Hawaii's cage-free shark diving experience on Oahu's North Shore. Their research-based approach teaches guests species identification and respectful interaction, and their advocacy helped pass Hawaii's HB553 (2021), which banned the intentional killing of sharks in state waters.
"Who will be in the water with us?"
Trained marine biologists, divemasters, freedivers, and professional safety divers from One Ocean Diving lead every group and monitor conditions the entire time. Our program was founded by shark researcher Ocean Ramsey and photographer Juan Oliphant, and 70% of our team are women marine biologists and educators.
"Do you guarantee sharks?"
Yes. One Ocean Diving guarantees you will see at least one shark while in the water on our North Shore Oahu tour, or we will issue a full refund. On an average trip guests see 3–20 sandbar sharks and 2–15 Galapagos sharks, with tiger sharks and scalloped hammerheads appearing seasonally.
Welcome to One Ocean Diving. Whether you are an experienced ocean enthusiast or preparing for your very first shark diving adventure, this guide answers the most common questions about our cage-free shark diving tours in Hawaii.
Our shark tours operate from Haleiwa Harbor on Oahu’s North Shore and are led by highly trained marine biologists, professional in-water safety divers, divemasters, and experienced ocean educators. Our goal is to provide an unforgettable wildlife experience while helping guests better understand sharks, marine conservation, and Hawaii’s incredible open-ocean ecosystem.
Booking Your Shark Tour
How do I book a shark tour?
The easiest way to reserve your shark tour is through our online booking system. Availability is updated live 24/7.
If the website says “Call to Book,” that departure is likely full. Please choose another available time or call/text our office at (808) 649-0018. If your schedule is limited, we may be able to add another trip or place you on a waitlist.
If you are visiting Hawaii, we recommend booking your shark dive early in your vacation. Our tours depend on ocean conditions, so booking earlier gives us more flexibility to reschedule if weather requires it.
Office Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM HST
What is your cancellation, no-show, and late arrival policy?
Because our shark tours have very limited space and often sell out in advance, we do not offer refunds for cancellations, no-shows, or late arrivals made within 24 hours of your scheduled departure.
If you need to reschedule, please contact us more than 24 hours before your trip by calling, texting, and emailing our office. Your request must be confirmed by our team before it is considered received.
Please allow extra travel time when driving to Haleiwa Harbor, especially during weekends, holidays, and North Shore traffic.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled departure time.
We meet near the white fish scale by Haleiwa Joe’s Restaurant and our blue One Ocean Diving kiosk near the boat launch.
Please use the restroom before boarding, as our boats do not have restroom facilities.
Before Your Shark Tour
Is there an age or height requirement?
There is no minimum age to ride aboard the boat.
To enter the water, guests must:
- Be at least 4 feet tall
- Be physically capable of swimming
- Be comfortable following instructions in the water
Guests under 80 pounds must bring a properly fitted life vest.
Infants and very small children should remain ashore with a caregiver. We are not able to care for infants or tiny children onboard while guests are in the water.
Guests who prefer not to enter the water are welcome to join as Ride-Along participants. Ride-Along guests can enjoy the educational experience from the boat, observe sharks from above, and often see other marine life.
Do I need previous diving or snorkeling experience?
No. This is not a scuba dive.
Our experience is a professionally guided cage-free shark snorkel in the clear blue waters off Oahu’s North Shore. You may remain comfortably at the surface the entire time, or you may swim below the surface if you are comfortable doing so.
Previous dive certifications are not required.
I’m not a strong swimmer. Can I still participate?
Yes, but you should be physically fit enough to swim and follow instructions.
We have professional in-water safety divers and a floating safety line attached to the boat that guests may hold onto. Please let the captain and safety diver know if you are not confident in your swimming ability.
If you are uncomfortable snorkeling, you may still participate as a Ride-Along guest from the boat.
Do I need to wear a wetsuit?
No. A wetsuit is not required for this program.
Most guests are comfortable without one because Hawaii’s ocean temperatures are warm year-round. We recommend wearing a rash guard for sun and jellyfish protection. Rash guards are available onboard upon request.
If you get cold easily, you are welcome to bring your own wetsuit.
Do you provide snorkeling equipment?
Yes. We provide:
- Mask
- Fins
- Eco-friendly defog solution
You are welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
How can I prevent seasickness?
To reduce the chance of seasickness, we recommend getting enough rest the night before and taking motion sickness medication the night before and again about two hours before boarding.
Avoid alcohol, coffee, orange juice, citrus, greasy foods, and heavy meals before your trip. Dry, bland foods like crackers or bread may help settle your stomach before boarding.
If you begin feeling seasick during the tour, look toward the horizon, stay in fresh air near the back of the boat, keep cool, sip small amounts of water, and bring ginger if it helps you.
Can I participate if I have an open cut or I’m on my period?
Yes.
Shark behavior is not affected by normal amounts of human blood from minor cuts or menstruation. Many of our marine biologists, divemasters, and in-water safety divers are women who work safely in the ocean with sharks year-round.
Safety & Your Shark Diving Experience
Is shark diving in Hawaii safe?
Safety is our highest priority.
Like all open-ocean activities, shark diving takes place in a natural, uncontrolled environment. No responsible operator can guarantee complete safety. The ocean can include changing conditions, jellyfish, sharks, and other wild animals.
What we can control is our preparation, training, and safety procedures.
One Ocean Diving’s owners have over twenty years of experience leading shark diving and marine education programs in Hawaii and maintain a 100% safety record with zero in-water guest incidents. Our crew members are professionally trained and go through extensive preparation before leading guests in the water.
Every tour is guided by experienced marine biologists, divemasters, and professional in-water safety divers who are trained specifically for Hawaii’s conditions and this area of Oahu’s North Shore.
Who will be in the water with us?
Your tour will be led by experienced professionals, including marine biologists, divemasters, freedivers, and trained in-water safety divers.
Safety divers enter the water first and are the last ones out. They stay with guests throughout the experience, monitor shark behavior, monitor guest comfort, and provide guidance in the water.
Before entering the water, your team will explain shark behavior, safety rules, respectful wildlife interaction, hand signals, and how to enter and exit the water.
What if I get nervous or change my mind?
That is completely okay.
Many guests are excited but nervous before entering the water. You are never required to get in. You may watch from the boat, take your time, enter later, or remain onboard for the entire trip.
Your comfort and safety come first.
How many guests are in the water at one time?
For safety, comfort, and the highest-quality experience, we keep groups small.
The maximum number of guests per professional safety diver is six. Our boats may carry up to 12 guests, with a safety diver for each group of six.
How long is the shark tour?
Each tour lasts approximately 2 hours.
Please arrive early and be ready to board on time so you can maximize your experience.
How long is the boat ride?
The boat ride to the shark diving location usually takes 15–25 minutes, depending on ocean conditions.
During the ride, your crew will look for dolphins, whales during whale season, Honu, monk seals, seabirds, flying fish, and other marine life. You will also receive a thorough educational briefing on shark behavior, marine life, safety rules, and how to respectfully share the water with large marine animals.
How much time will I spend in the water?
Most guests spend approximately 45–60 minutes in the water.
Actual time depends on ocean conditions, weather, shark behavior, group size, guest comfort, and how long it takes everyone to put on gear and enter the water.
If conditions are rough or if shark behavior requires more space, the safety divers may rotate guests in smaller groups. If you want the most possible water time, volunteer to enter first after the safety diver and, when possible, join the final rotation.
What happens if the weather changes?
Safety always comes first.
Large surf and rain do not necessarily cancel the tour. Strong winds and unsafe surface conditions are more likely to affect operations. If conditions are not safe or comfortable, your captain and safety team may delay, reschedule, rotate guests, or cancel the tour.
We recommend booking an earlier time of day and booking early in your vacation to allow flexibility if weather requires rescheduling.
Can I stay on the boat instead of getting in the water?
Yes. Guests who do not want to enter the water may join as Ride-Along participants.
You can still observe marine life from the boat, learn about shark behavior, listen to the educational briefing, and enjoy the open-ocean experience.
Sharks & Marine Life
What sharks will I see?
The most common sharks seen on our tours are:
- Sandbar Sharks
- Galapagos Sharks
Other species occasionally seen include:
- Tiger Sharks
- Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks
Rare sightings have included:
- Whale Sharks
- Great White Sharks
- Shortfin Mako Sharks
- Silky Sharks
- Oceanic Whitetip Sharks
- Oceanic Blacktip Sharks
Because these are wild animals in their natural environment, every tour is different.
Do you guarantee sharks?
Yes. We guarantee that you will see at least one shark in the water or we will issue a full refund.
We cannot guarantee how many sharks you will see, which species will be present, or exactly how close they will come.
How many sharks will I see?
Every day is different, but common sightings may include:
- 3–20 Sandbar Sharks
- 2–15 Galapagos Sharks
Tiger Sharks are seen less often, on average about once a month. Scalloped Hammerheads are rarer and may occasionally be seen in groups.
Rare species such as Whale Sharks, Great White Sharks, Mako Sharks, Silky Sharks, Oceanic Whitetips, and Oceanic Blacktips have been observed, but they are not seen regularly.
Are the sharks wild?
Yes. The sharks are completely wild and free to come and go as they choose.
Our goal is to observe natural shark behavior respectfully and help guests better understand the animals and their role in the ocean ecosystem.
Why do sharks come close to people?
Sharks are curious animals. They may approach to investigate objects, movement, and activity in their environment.
Our marine biologists help guests understand shark body language and behavior so the experience feels educational, respectful, and less fear-based.
Are sharks dangerous?
Sharks are large wild animals and should always be respected.
However, they are not the mindless predators often shown in movies. Our tours focus on education, awareness, and responsible wildlife interaction so guests can better understand sharks as intelligent and important marine animals.
Can sharks smell blood?
Yes, sharks have an excellent sense of smell.
However, small amounts of human blood from minor cuts or menstruation do not automatically attract sharks or trigger aggressive behavior. Based on current understanding and decades of experience, this does not prevent guests from participating.
What other marine life might we see?
Depending on the season and ocean conditions, guests may also see:
- Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins
- Humpback Whales from November through May
- Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, also called Honu
- Hawaiian Monk Seals
- Flying Fish, also called Malolo
- Boobies and other seabirds
- Other offshore marine life
And if you are really lucky, you may even spot the fascinating and elusive @JuanSharks.
Photography, Cameras & Equipment
Can I bring my own camera or GoPro?
Yes, but there are safety rules.
Small handheld cameras are not permitted in the water. GoPros are allowed only if they are mounted on a dark-colored pole at least 6 inches in length.
We usually have older GoPro poles onboard that guests may borrow for free, but we are not responsible if a borrowed pole breaks or if a GoPro is lost.
Do you offer professional photos or video?
Yes. We offer professional photography and video package options.
Please text the office at (808) 649-0018 before your trip to book professional photography. GoPro footage may also be available to sign up for on the day of your tour.
Can I fly my drone?
No, drones are not permitted on regular tours for safety reasons.
Our boats are small, the North Shore is often windy, and drones can create safety risks onboard. Exceptions may be available for private charters. Please contact our office for details.
Conservation & Education
Why are your shark tours educational?
One Ocean Diving’s tours are designed to be more than a sightseeing experience. Each trip includes education about shark behavior, marine life, safety, conservation, and respectful wildlife interaction.
Our goal is for guests to leave with a deeper understanding of sharks and a greater appreciation for Hawaii’s marine ecosystem.
Why are sharks important?
Sharks play a critical role in healthy ocean ecosystems.
As apex predators, they help maintain balance in marine food webs and influence the behavior and health of other species. Protecting sharks helps protect coral reefs, fish populations, and the broader ocean environment.
How does joining a shark tour help conservation?
Responsible shark tourism can help replace fear with understanding.
When guests safely observe sharks with trained marine educators, they often leave with more respect for these animals and a stronger desire to protect them. One Ocean Diving also participates in education, outreach, conservation work, and community efforts to support marine life and ocean health.
